Iconic or Tacky? A Countdown of Forgotten Movies from Our Youth

Remember the joy of popping a VHS tape into the VCR and diving into a world of adventure, robots, and playful mischief? For us self-professed nerds, the '80s and '90s were a golden era of cinema. While classics like "E.T." and "Back to the Future" are still celebrated, some hidden gems from our childhood have faded into obscurity. Were they iconic masterpieces or tacky misfires? Let's count down and decide together.

5. D.A.R.Y.L. (1985)

"D.A.R.Y.L." tells the story of a young boy named Daryl who is actually a Data-Analysing Robot Youth Lifeform, created by the government with superhuman intelligence. He escapes from a laboratory and is adopted by a loving family while hiding his true identity. With the power of AI today, the film's premise feels all too close to home.

Verdict – Tacky

Besides wanting to be Daryl when I was a kid—such cool powers!—the movie felt more like a made-for-TV production.

It’s been a common story though - Spielberg's AI, Ex Machina, Chappie, M3GAN, The Creator, and more than enough Black Mirror episodes.

Speaking of made-for-TV, does anyone remember “Not Quite Human”? Same same, but different.

4. Mac and Me (1988)

"Mac and Me" follows the adventures of a young boy named Eric, who befriends a stranded alien named Mac. Together, they evade government agents while trying to reunite Mac with his family.

Verdict - Tacky

Often remembered for its blatant product placement and its attempt to cash in on the success of "E.T.," "Mac and Me" is more infamous than beloved. Its campy execution and over-the-top scenes make it a prime example of tacky '80s cinema. Gosh, I remember 8-year-old me thinking the character effects were tacky then!

3. Short Circuit (1986)

"Short Circuit" introduces Number 5, a military robot struck by lightning and given the gift of life. He escapes his creators and finds friendship with Stephanie Speck, learning about humanity and self-awareness along the way.

Verdict - Iconic

"Short Circuit," probably my most watched VHS, is a delightful blend of humour, heart, and sci-fi charm. Number 5’s lovable personality and the film's exploration of what it means to be alive make it an iconic piece of '80s cinema. Its enduring appeal and memorable quotes ("Number 5 is alive!") ensure its place in the iconic category.

Side note; Some legend has created an amazing replica of Johnny 5 on instagram.

2. Toys (1992)

"Toys" is set in a magical toy factory where the eccentric Leslie Zevo (Robin Williams, no less) must protect the joyful essence of toy-making from his militaristic uncle, who aims to turn the factory into a war machine.

Verdict – Iconic

With its visually stunning sets, whimsical storyline, and underlying message about the importance of preserving innocence and fun, "Toys" stands out as a unique and memorable film. Williams’ and Joan Cusacks' performance adds to its charm, making it a truly iconic movie that defies categorization.

1. Flight of the Navigator (1986)

"Flight of the Navigator" follows 12-year-old David Freeman, who is abducted by an alien spaceship and reappears eight years later without ageing. He embarks on a journey with a wisecracking alien ship named Max to uncover the truth about his disappearance and return to his family.

Verdict - You Decide

With its imaginative plot and groundbreaking special effects, "Flight of the Navigator" is a beloved childhood memory for many. However, the choice of a quirky, sarcastic voice for the navigator (voiced by Paul Reubens) leaves some viewers scratching their heads. Was this a stroke of genius or a misstep? You decide.

What do you think? Are these films iconic pieces of cinema history ready for a 4K remaster, or tacky relics doomed to sit on the shelf of an abandoned Blockbuster?
